S. Korea logs fastest export gain among top 10 trading nations
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea achieved the fastest export growth among the world's top 10 trading nations in the first four months of this year, fueled by a rise in overseas demand for locally made products, a government report showed Tuesday.
The report based on data by the World Trade Organization showed the country's exports surging 27.9 percent to US$179.60 billion in the January-April period, surpassing the 27.4 percent growth tallied for China.
In terms of export volume, South Korea placed seventh after China, Germany, the United States, Japan, the Netherlands and France, and ahead of Italy, Russia and Belgium, according to the report by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Exports of Germany and the United States jumped 18.7 percent and 18.9 percent, respectively, while Japan's overseas shipments moved up 9 percent on-year due to the fallout of the massive quake and nuclear disaster that hit the country in March.
South Korea has maintained its seventh-place standing since the second quarter of 2010. It ranked ninth in the first quarter of last year but moved up to eighth place in the January-April period of 2010 with exports totaling $140.38 billion.
The latest report, meanwhile, showed Seoul remaining the ninth-largest importer in the world in the four months of this year, unchanged from 2010.
The country's overall trade volume ranking also stood at ninth place with two-way trade expanding 26.7 percent to $347.28 billion in the cited period. The trade volume increase is the second highest after the 28.5 percent gain tallied for China, the ministry said.
The United States remained the largest trading nation with exports and imports reaching $1.18 trillion, followed by China with $1.10 trillion and Germany with $884.45 billion.
