Data on victims of N W Russia jet crash corrected, 1 person dead
MOSCOW, June 21 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's Ministry for Emergency
Situations and Civil Defense /EMERCOM/ says one person died as result of
crash-landing of a Tupolev-134 jet near Petrozavodsk, the administrative
center of Russia's northwest region of Karelia.
"According to the latest data, the crash-landing left one person dead,
while another eight people were rushed to hospital in a heavy condition,"
EMERCOM's chief spokeswoman Irina Andrianova told Itar-Tass.
Earlier reports indicated the Tupolev-134 crashed at 23:55 Monday. It
took off at 22:30 from Moscow's Dododedovo airport with 48 people aboard.
In the meantime, sources in the commercial aviation industry say the
accident might have been caused by problematic weather conditions.
"Initial data indicates that the accident was caused by bad weather,"
a source said.
On the face of it, officials at the Russian Federal Agency for Air
Transport /Rosaviatsiya/ declined to speculate about the causes.
Irina Andrianova also said that EMERCOM is sending an Ilyushin-76 jet
to Karelia to help with evacuation of the injured.
It is fitted out with medical modules for possible transportation of
the injured, she said.
