AFRICA MUST EMBRACE HIGHER STANDARDS TO COMPETE IN GLOBAL'S MANUFACTURING
By Mohd Khairi Idham
KUALA KUBU BAHARU (Malaysia), June 21 (Bernama) -- African countries must
embrace higher standards and industrial research practices to boost their
manufacturing competitiveness globally, a research official said.
They should join the World Association of Industrial and Technological
Research Organisation (WAITRO) to capitalise on the opportunities of gathering
research information as well as share technological know-how among members.
In encouraging them to join the global innovation family, WAITRO second
vice-president Prof Charles Kwesiga said there was a lot to gained from members
in the association.
The membership will also enable members to enhance their capabilities in
management of research and technological organisations, he told Bernama during a
field trip by participants of the Langkawi International Dialogue to SIRIM's
Machinery and Equipment Technology Centre at Rasa near here yesterday.
The participants were from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Uganda, Ghana as well as
locals.
Established in 1970, WAITRO is an independent, non-governmental and
non-profit association which aims to be an enabler for developing action
oriented partnerships among member organisations for sustainable development.
WAITRO, which has a secretariat at SIRIM Bhd in Shah Alam, currently has 168
members in 77 countries and cooperates with over 500 other institutes and
international agencies worldwide.
SIRIM is the national research and technology development corporation which
provides institutional and technical infrastructure for the public and private
sector.
The field trip dubbed as the "smart partnership dialogue in the field" which
focused on competitiveness in manufacturing.
Kwesiga said the sharing of research experiences and knowledge was made
possible as WAITRO encouraged and facilitated transfer of research results and
technical know-how among its members.
Earlier, delegates toured around the centre and were shown the national
research institute product development process from manufacturing to
fabrications of finished products.
The delegates were also briefed by SIRIM vice president Mohamad Jamil
Sulaiman on the corporation's development since its inception in 1975, corporate
structure and achievements.
