S. Korea bans travel to Yemen amid violence

SEOUL, June 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is banning its people from traveling to Yemen amid growing violence between the Middle Eastern nation's army and suspected al-Qaida militants, the foreign ministry here said Tuesday.
The travel ban is expected to take effect on June 28 and last for six months, the ministry said in a statement. South Korean nationals who wish to remain in Yemen after that date must apply to the government for permission, it said.
Under South Korean law, those who stay in the country without permission will be subject to a maximum of one year in prison or 3 million won (US$2,783) in fines.
Some 25 South Koreans, excluding staff at the South Korean embassy, are currently in Yemen.
South Korea also has travel bans on Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia and Iraq.
