FM Urges Closer Cooperation between Iran, Ecuador
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Tuesday underlined importance of ties between Iran and Latin American states, Ecuador in particular, and called for increased coordination between Tehran and Quito in different fields.
Speaking at a meeting with Ecuadorian Ambassador to Iran Bicente Blis, Salehi said that the two countries should have further coordination and cooperation in different political, economic and cultural fields and based on the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that have already been signed between the two sides.
He also called on Iran and Ecuador to use their capacities and power for further expansion of relations.
Bicente Blis, who started his mission as Ecuador's first envoy to Tehran, submitted a copy of his credentials to Salehi at the meeting.
He added that further expansion of cultural, economic and political ties is on his agenda, and expressed the hope that the two countries' relations would further expand during his mission in Tehran.
Last Month, Bicente had said his country's foreign policy prioritizes relations with independent states like Iran, and stressed that his country will never bow to the pressures exerted by the opponents of the Tehran-Quito ties.
Speaking in an interview with FNA in Quito prior to his departure to Tehran, Bicente Blis stressed that when it comes to the ties with Iran, the Ecuadorian government doesn't pay attention to the negative propaganda and pressures imposed by certain foreign countries.
In April, Ecuador's National Assembly Speaker Fernando Cordero Cueva underlined his country's resolve to boost ties with Iran.
Those who oppose close ties between Iran and Ecuador have launched a propaganda campaign aimed at marring the positive relations between the two states, Cueva stated in a meeting with Iran's Energy Minister Majid Namjou in the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito.
Iran has in recent years expanded friendly ties with Latin America, specially in economic, trade and industrial fields.
Since taking office in 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expanded Iran's cooperation with many Latin American states, including Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba.
