Ex-Official Stresses Bushehr Power Plant's Safety against Natural Incidents
TEHRAN (FNA)- Former head of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant reiterated on Tuesday that the plant complies with the latest safety rules and standards, and is fully resistant to natural incidents.
"Natural incidents do not have any impact on the Bushehr power plant," Nasser Shariflou said, addressing a meeting in Iran's Northwestern city of Zanjan today.
Shariflou underlined that Iran has taken all safety precautions and observed all safety codes for the construction and operation of the power station.
Iran has always rejected the comparisons drawn by certain western states between Bushehr nuclear power plant and Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant.
On March 11, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, off the northeast coast of Japan's main island, unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks.
The earthquake set off a nuclear crisis by knocking out power to the cooling systems at the Fukushima plant. Since then, most of the plant's six reactor units have been damaged by fires, explosions or partial meltdowns.
The destruction has also been followed by a radiation leak, raising fears of a nuclear fallout.
Yesterday, Iran's top nuclear official Fereidoon Abbasi reiterated that Bushehr power plant complies with the latest safety rules and standards, and said ensuring full safety of the plant before its official launch is Iran's top priority.
"Our priority is ensuring full safety of the power plant before launching it," Abbasi, who is the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said, addressing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear safety conference in Vienna on Monday.
"Today, I proudly declare that the Bushehr nuclear power plant enjoys the most up-to-date safety standards similar to the other nuclear facilities in the world," he added.
IAEA nuclear safety inspectors have also confirmed full safety of the plant.
