S. Korea firms to build thermal power plant in Turkey
SEOUL, June 22 (Yonhap) -- Two South Korean companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a large coal-fired thermal power plant in southern Turkey, industry sources said Wednesday.
Sources said Korea Namdong Electrics, an affiliate of state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., and SK Engineering & Construction Co. signed a US$697 million pact earlier in the month to build a power plant in the Tufanbeyli region about 350 kilometers southeast of Ankara.
The plant, located just 2 kilometers from an operational coal mine, is expected to have three 150- megawatt power units. Construction is set to be completed around Feb. 2015.
Under the agreement, SK will be mainly responsible for building the plant, while Namdong will oversee construction and conduct trial tests to make certain there are no problems before full-fledged commercial operations begin.
