Japan provides US$100,000 for irrigation and rural road construction

(KPL) The Government of Japan pledged to grant US$100,000 for the construction of the Namtin area irrigation system in Bokeo province and the rural road between Koudkhan village and Nongdeun village in Ardsaphone district, Savannakhet province. The grant was under the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project.
The Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Mr. Masaaki Miyashita, Head of Agriculture and Forestry Division of Bokeo province, Mr Bounmy Souvannalangsy and chief of Koudkhan Village, Mr Bounsub Souphomany signed the document which described the cash grant for the projects in Vientiane Capital on 9 September.
The construction project of Namtin area irrigation system in Houaisai district, Bokeo province, is estimated to cost US$9,856, and US$82,494 was allocated for the construction of the rural road in Adsaphone district in Savannakhet province.
Mr Bounmy said the irrigation work was important for local farmers as they need irrigated water during the dry season. On its completion the irrigation system should be able to irrigate 2,210 ha of farmland during the rainy season and 700 ha during the dry season.
He also said that the irrigation system would enable farmers to raise their productivity of agricultural production and they would sell the surplus in the market. Chief of Ardsaphone district, Dr Somphaphone Nanthanavone said that the villagers of only 23 out of 56 villages in Ardsaphone district were able to use the existing road on a year-round basis. The other villagers could only use the road during in dry season.
He said in 2005, the district received assistance worth US$44,000 from Japan for the construction of a primary school in Napod village.
Mr Miyashita said the construction of the rural road between Koudkhan village and Nongdeun village would provide villagers with better access to the centre of the district and so they would be able to get access to education, health and economic facilities, which would eventually improve their quality of life.
