Iraqi FM Stresses Importance of Ties with Iran for New Iraq

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart here in Tehran, stressed that the new Iraq attaches much importance to its ties with Iran.
"We in the new Iraq attach special importance to relations with Iran, relying on our historical and religious commonalities as well as neighborliness," Zebari said.

"Expansion of all-out ties with Iran sets a priority for Iraq's foreign policy," Zebari stated according to a report released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Bureau.

He further appreciated Iran's constant support for Iraq since the establishment of the new Iraq, and said the existing relations between the two countries has yielded great achievements in different fields, including politics, economy, trade, culture, border issues, communication, tourism and pilgrimage and specially in determining the two sides land and water borders.

Salehi, for his part, underlined Iraq's significant role in the region, and added that Tehran supports further expansion of ties with Iraq.

He also expressed the hope that his negotiations with Zebari would produce constructive results desirable for both sides.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Both sides are working on a series of plans to take wide strides in the expansion of their ties, in economic fields in particular.

The Iranian government and private investors have expressed major interest in taking the numerous investment opportunities existing in Iraq, given the profound cultural, historical and religious bonds existing between the two neighboring nations.
