S. Korea developing ship-to-surface cruise missile
SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military is developing a new ship-to-surface cruise missile, a state-run defense researcher said Thursday, as part of its efforts to boost defense against North Korea.
The new missile is being modified from the nation's homegrown anti-ship cruise missile, named the Haeseong-1, and the development would be completed by 2013, said Song Byeong-kyu, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute of Defense Analyses.
"The new missile is being developed for both vertical and slant launch systems," Song said in a report released for a defense forum in Seoul. "And the development of the vertical-launch version will be completed by 2013."
Details of the new missile, including its operational range or speed, were not disclosed.
In 2003, South Korea developed the Haeseong-1 missile, which is deployed on KDX-II and KDX-III destroyers, each carrying eight and 16 of the missiles, respectively. The anti-ship missile has a range of 150 kilometers, according to military officials.
