High-ranking FSC official indicted on bribery charges

A high-ranking financial regulator was indicted by prosecutors Thursday on charges of accepting bribes from a scandal-ridden bank in exchange for helping thwart audits into the institution, proseuctors said.
Prosecutors said Kim Gwang-soo, commissioner of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the control of the Financial Services Commission (FSC), is accused of receiving a total of 40 million won (US$37,160) from Busan Savings Bank over the past five years.
Kim, who was arrested earlier this month, is also suspected of helping the Busan bank take over two smaller savings banks, while serving as the chief of the financial service bureau at the FSC between 2008 and 2009.
Kim also allegedly used his clout last year to keep Busan Savings Bank from going under with illegal loans and other financial irregularities. He was with the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) at the time.
Several other officials have been implicated in the snowballing savings bank scandal, including Kim Jong-chang, former head of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), and former presidential aide Kim Hae-soo.
