Hyundai Equus ranks 2nd in U.S. quality test

SEOUL (Yonhap) - Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker, said Friday that its large passenger car Equus ranked second in a U.S. quality test with the highest marks for any South Korean vehicle in history.
The Equus received 61 points in the Initial Quality Study (IQS) by J.D. Power and Associates, a U.S.-based marketing information service company, taking second place in the segment of large premium cars. The 2011 Lexus LS of Japan's Toyota Motor Co. took first place in the segment.
The study is based on a survey of purchasers of new car models after 90 days of ownership to determine how frequently they experienced problems.
The points earned by the Equus also place the car fourth of all 234 car models studied, including compact cars and pickup trucks, Hyundai Motor said in a press release.
Other vehicles in the segment of large premium cars included the BMW 7 series, the Mercedes-Benz S Class and the Audi A8.
In the overall segment, Hyundai Motor said its vehicles were ranked fifth out of 20 non-premium nameplates in the IQS study with vehicles of its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. placing ninth.
"Our brand image is greatly improving following a series of recent reports praising the quality of our vehicles in the U.S.," a Hyundai Motor executive said. "The company will continue to work to outperform customer expectations with strict quality control efforts."
