Thai political parties campaigning hard for votes

BANGKOK, June 24 (TNA) - Thai political parties are launching their last lap of vote campaigns in the run-up to the country's new general election, set on July 3.

The ruling Thai Democrat Party is now focusing its campaign caravans in Bangkok to woo support from voters in the capital; while its arch rival, the Pheu Thai Party, aligned with exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, is emphasizing its electoral campaigns in provincial areas and assigning Thaksin's children to, on the other hand, woo votes in the Thai capital.

Thai caretaker prime minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday launched campaign caravans to 10 locations in Bangkok, with key Democrats and candidates separately conducting their field campaigns.

Abhisit said he believed that the majority of the Thai electorate will vote for his Democrat Party to ensure national progress, admitting, however, that his party has to campaign heavily due to rising product prices and tactics of political rivals.

Meanwhile, Yingluck Shinawatra, the top list candidate of the Pheu Thai Party, campaigned in Thailand's northeastern Chaiyaphum and Nakhon Ratchasima Provinces.

Former Thai interior minister Purachai Piumsomboon, now the top list candidate of his newly-set up Rak Santi Party, campaigned for votes at a market in the central municipality of the country's northernmost Mae Hong Son province.

Chart Thai Pattana Party leader Chumpol Silpaarcha campaigned in Bangkok's Khlong Toey area, saying that he was not worried over negative poll results about his party, and that his party will woo votes in the Northeast on Saturday and then conclude its electoral campaign with a big speech rally in the central Nakhon Pathom Province on July 1.
