Thailand destroys narcotics worth Bt74bn

AYUTTHAYA, June 24 (TNA) - Thailand burned out more than 2.4 tonnes of drugs, worth some 74 billion baht on Friday, as part of the country's observation of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on every June 26, designated by the United Nations.

Thai caretaker public health minister Jurin Laksanawisit presided over the country's 39th drug disposal event, held at Bangpa-in Industrial Estate in the central Ayutthaya Province, where authorities set fire on drugs seized from previous raids, including some 22 million methamphetamine tablets.

As previous years, Thailand's 2011 drug disposal was witnessed by representatives of the local public and private sectors, as well as international diplomatic corps. The Thai authorities used the environmentally-friendly "pyrolytic incineration" system, which has the combustion temperature above 850 degree Celsius, to destroy the seized narcotics.

According to the Thai minister, altogether 2,426 kilograms of drugs valued at 74 billion baht were destroyed this year. The drugs, confiscated from 3,833 lawsuit cases, included from amphetamine, heroine, methamphetamine, ecstasy cocaine and marijuana. (TNA)
