Medvedev to chair meeting in Kazan to discuss athletes' training.

KAZAN, June 25 (Itar-Tass) -- The prospects of Russia's team at the
2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi will be in focus of a special conference in
Kazan that President Dmitry Medvedev will chair in person on Saturday.
The capital of Tatarstan will host a joint "field meeting" of the
presidential council on physical fitness and sports, and on preparing for
the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in 2014, the World Summer
Student Games of 2013, the Soccer World Cup in 2018 and the Olympic
athletes support foundation in Russia.
As the working group of the Council has told Itar-Tass, "the purpose
of the meeting is to develop solutions for the training of high-class
athletes for the successful performance at competitions." The main report
will be presented by the Minister of Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy
Vitaly Mutko. On the agenda there are such issues as the development of
athletic training, medical and biological support for the teams, the
development of a system of material incentives for athletes, coaches and
specialists teams.
"To summarize the results of the latest sports seasons one should note
that at the 2010 world summer sports championships Russian athletes won
second place in the unofficial team standings," experts recall. "But in
2010 ten world competitions were not held, including those in track and
field athletics and swimming. It is in these sports that the Russian
athletes face serious competitors from the Americas, Canada and China,"
the source told Itar-Tass.
As for winter sports, "in the season of 2010-2011 the Russian team in
the unofficial team standings ranked 13th, and in the light of results at
the world championships in Olympic events, 14th."
"The performance in skiing and biathlon was unsatisfactory," the
working group said.
At the same time "high sports results were achieved in sports that are
not traditionally Russia's strong points - bobsleighing and snowboarding."
"Positive trends were also observed in the speed skating, ski
jumping, tobogganing, figure skating and freestyle," experts said.
