SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL PORT KEEN ON LABUAN
LABUAN (Malaysia), June 25 (Bernama) -- Shanghai International Port (Group)
Co Ltd has expressed interest to take part in the development of Labuan,
particularly its port facilities.
Representatives from the company, accompanied by Shanghai Municipal Council
officers, were here today and were briefed by Labuan Corporation officials on
the overall development of Labuan.
They were toured to various industrial zones around the island including the
oil and gas hub, Petronas methanol plant, shipyard in Rancha-Rancha and
halal hub in Kiansam.
Jimmy Naeinian, Managing Director of Australian Pars International
Trading Company Ltd, the Shanghai International Port consultant, told reporters
that they would submit the necessary documentation and working papers to the
various ministries including the Transport and Federal Territories and Urban
Wellbeing ministries on possible joint ventures.
"Labuan, being strategically located within the Asian region with natural
depth of sea, has attracted us to see its potential.
"But based on our survey and briefing since our first day here in Labuan,
there is still lacking in the area of port facilities, and this we need to see
the relevant ministries and we are looking at meeting the prime minister for
this purpose," he said.
Labuan Corporation Chairman Yussof Mahal said the visit of the Chinese
investors was a follow up to a visit in his capacity as MP for Labuan to
Shanghai.
"We have successfully turned the island into an oil and gas hub but the port
is still lacking in terms of facilities. We need a bigger and modern port to
cater for those in the oil and gas players around the region.
"This future investment for an integrated port in Labuan and the recent RM3
billion integrated petroleum oil tank storage which has received the nod from
the federal government would certainly help generate spin-offs for the island’s
economy and its surroundings," he said.
Labuan is a federal territory in East Malaysia. It is an island off the
coast of the state of Sabah. Labuan is best known as an offshore financial
centre offering international financial and business services via Labuan IBFC
since 1990 as well as being an offshore support hub for deepwater oil and gas
activities in the region.
