Ahmadinejad: West Seeking to Change Map of Region

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that hegemonic powers have hatched a plot to change the map of the region, and asked for the start of dialogue and talks between the regional nations and their rulers in a bid to end the current conflicts.
"Everybody should take care not to allow certain western governments to implement their hegemonic goals in the region," Ahmadinejad said at a meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi here in Tehran on Friday evening, adding that the West is trying to change the region's political map.

He pointed to the recent developments in a number of Middle-Eastern and North African countries, and stated, "This time, the hegemonic powers have entered the scene with (an allegedly) changed view and in the name of defending people's rights, but they are seeking the same old colonialist goals."

President Ahmadinejad further underlined that dialogue and understanding between regional nations and their rulers is the best and most effective way to end the ongoing conflicts in the regional states.

The Omani minister, for his part, underlined Iran's unique and influential stance on the regional developments, and stated, "Similar to Iran, Oman believes that regional developments should settled down through constructive interaction and talks between the conflicting sides."

In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has been sweeping the Arab world.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.

Other revolutions have since then erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while anti-government unrests are spreading across Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
