Karzai Urges Different Tactics in Campaign against Terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai voiced concern about the growing expansion and spread of terrorism throughout the world, and stressed that campaign against this inauspicious phenomenon cannot be done only through military means.
"I believe that campaign against terrorism is not possible only through military means," Karzai said, addressing the International Conference on Global Fight against Terrorism here in Tehran on Saturday.

"Rather, we should make use of all means and instruments to defend our countries (against terrorism)," Karzai added.

He further stressed that the world has failed to experience peace and security because of terrorism, and said, "Now terrorism has grown so powerful that no country can remain safe from this evil phenomenon."

The Afghan president also asked all countries to abide by their commitments and undertakings in the fight against terrorism, "because terrorism has inflicted many harms and vast destructions on the world at present".

The Tehran conference has brought together senior officials from at least 60 countries, and representatives from several international organizations including the UN.

The event is aimed at increasing international convergence and coordination in fighting terrorism.

The topics to be discussed in the two-day summit include various aspects of fighting terrorism, reasons behind the increasing trend of terrorist activities in the world, challenges and obstacles in the way of fighting terrorism, and enhancing appropriate counter-terrorism means and strategies at bilateral, regional and international levels.
