S. Korea's number of births up for 14th straight month in April
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The number of babies born in South Korea grew for the 14th straight month in April amid the government's efforts to boost the nation's prolonged low birthrate, a report showed Sunday.
According to the report by Statistics Korea, the number of babies born in April came to 40,600, up 6 percent or 2,300 from the same month a year earlier.
The number of births has been on the rise since March last year after suffering a 24-month consecutive decline, the report showed.
The report did not specify the reason for the growth but observers say that the ongoing economic recovery might have encouraged couples to have babies.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths totaled 21,200 in April, up 1 percent or 200 from a year earlier. The number of people tying the knot declined 5.5 percent to 25,700, and divorces also fell 9.6 percent to 8,500.
In a separate report, the agency said that the number of people changing their legal residence in May increased 1.3 percent to 672,000.
