S. Korea to strengthen cooperation with China to tackle phone scam

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean police said Sunday its officials plan to meet with their Chinese counterparts this week in Beijing to discuss ways to boost cooperation in combating phone fraud scams and cyber crimes.
The two sides are scheduled to sign an accord during their meeting on Tuesday that would strengthen joint investigation and cooperation on prosecuting the crimes, Seoul's police agency said.
The move demonstrates the latest commitment by Seoul and Beijing to fight widespread phone fraud scams against South Koreans that have caused huge financial damage in South Korea in recent years.
In phone fraud, commonly known as voice phishing, a victim receives a random phone call from a scammer posing as an official alerting them to bank account problems. Victims are then ordered to transfer their entire account balances to other accounts, which scammers siphon off. Most of the scam operators are ethnic Koreans in China who are fluent in Korean.
The damage from phone fraud has surpassed 200 billion won (US$185 million) over the last three years, according to South Korean prosecution data. More than 1,500 suspected scammers are believed to have fled to China over the past five years.
