Lee, opposition leader fail to narrow gap over FTA with U.S.
President Lee Myung-bak and opposition leader Sohn Hak-kyu failed Monday to narrow differences over the free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States, as Sohn insisted on a renegotiation of the deal, according to a joint statement.
The trade pact was one of the six agenda items for the rare meeting between Lee and the opposition leader. Also discussed were calls for lower college tuitions, job creation, ways to curb household debts and the opposition demand for a supplementary budget.
On college education, Lee and Sohn agreed on the need for lowering tuitions, but differed on specifics, the joint statement said. The two sides agreed to continue talks on the issue, it said.
The two sides also agreed to draw up measures to curb household debts, it said.
