Iranian Airline President Dismisses US Sanctions

TEHRAN (FNA)- President of Iran's national career, Iran Air, condemned the United States' new sanctions against the company, saying that the Iranian airline is a civil company operating under the international aviation agreements.
"Iran's national airline is a member of the International Air Transport Association and it is committed to the international aviation law and its operations are completely within the framework of the aviation agreements and treaties that have been signed bilaterally and internationally," Farhad Parvaresh said.

"We are a commercial company and our job is transporting passengers and cargo," he added.

The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on two major Iranian commercial entities including Iran Air, the country's national carrier.

The US Department of Treasury alleged that Iran Air is used by the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) to transport military related equipment.

IranAir serves 35 international destinations in Asia and Europe. The company has been under US sanctions since 1995 that have prevented any sale of Boeing or Airbus aircraft or spare parts to it.

On Saturday, Parvaresh said the sanctions had been troublesome, but Tehran has managed to resolve such problems.

"It is natural that sanctions have created problems for the country's aviation industry. But many of them have been resolved through extra efforts of domestic experts," he said.

On Friday, Iran protested to the United Nations over the latest sanctions, calling the measures "extremely dangerous" and aimed at harming civilians.

Iran's UN Ambassador Mohammad Khazayee said in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that "continuation of this awkward (US) policy is extremely dangerous and will never serve to the maintenance of international peace and security."
