Iran's War on Narcotics: Police Seize Large Cargo of Narcotics in Southeastern Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's police squads discovered and seized one ton of narcotics after armed clashes with drug-traffickers in the country's Southeastern province of Kerman, a provincial police chief announced on Monday.
Kerman's Police Chief General Hossein Chenarian said that police forces in the town of Manoujan started action to intercept the large cargo after intelligence operations showed that the cargo has been smuggled to the region through eastern borders.
He said after the police teams identified the car used for smuggling the cargo, the drug-traffickers opened fire at the policemen and started an armed clash.
Chenarian mentioned that the vehicle was destroyed and drug cargo went on fire during the clash, adding that the police could eventually seize about one ton of burnt and half-burnt narcotics.
The police chief did not mention if any of the policemen or drug-traffickers were killed or injured in the conflict.
In March, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced that Iran's law enforcement police forces have seized over 400 tons of different types of narcotics during last Iranian year (ended on March 20).
According to the UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime), 93 percent of the world's opium is produced in the neighboring Afghanistan, 60 percent of which is destined for the EU and specially US markets, and the main transit route is Iran, where the country's dedicated police squad risk their lives to make the most discoveries of drug cargoes, disband drug-trafficking gangs and organizations and much more in a bid to rescue not only the Iranian youth but also all those living in Europe and the US.
The latest figures released by the UN in 2011 said that Iran makes 89 percent of the opium and 41 percent of the heroin netted around the world.
