Figure skater Kim Yu-na to miss Grand Prix circuit for second straight season
SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- For the second year in a row, South Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na will miss the Grand Prix circuit, according to the sport's world governing body Tuesday.
The International Skating Union (ISU) unveiled the list of participants for the 2011-2012 Grand Prix series, and Kim was not among them.
The Grand Prix series is made up of six events plus the Grand Prix Final, and skaters are invited to two events apiece. The top six skaters from the Grand Prix events, based on points awarded for high finishes, qualify for the Final.
Kim, the Olympic gold medalist in Vancouver and the 2010 world champion, skipped last year's Grand Prix series and only competed at the season-ending world championships, finishing second to Miki Ando of Japan in April.
After the worlds, she said she would once again sit out the Grand Prix season and concentrate on her role as an honorary ambassador for the Winter Olympic bidding efforts of PyeongChang, the South Korean candidate city for the 2018 Winter Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote on the host city on July 6 in Durban, South Africa.
The ISU invites skaters to Grand Prix events based on their performances in the previous season's Grand Prix and world championships.
Two-time world champion Ando and 2010 Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette of Canada will also sit out the Grand Prix series. Mao Asada of Japan, the 2009 world champ, will compete in the NHK Trophy in Sapporo and Rostelecom Cup in Moscow, the fourth and the sixth legs of the series.
Kim has won seven Grand Prix events and three Grand Prix Finals since making her senior debut in the 2006-2007 season. The 20-year-old holds the world record for points in the short program (78.50), free skate (150.06) and total points (228.56) under the new judging scale. All marks were set in Vancouver.
