Samsung, LG log lower share in N. American TV market
SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., the world's two largest makers of TVs, saw their North American market share decline in the first five months of 2011 from one year ago, a market report showed Tuesday.
The two Korean TV makers, however, retained dominant positions in the 3-D TV market in the United States and Canada, according to NPD Group, a U.S.-based market researcher.
The combined market share of Samsung and LG in North America's flat-screen TV market reached 45.9 percent by sales in the January-May period, compared with 46.6 percent one year ago, it said.
Samsung outperformed other TV makers in the five-month stretch, claiming 35 percent of the region's TV sales. LG accounted for 10.9 percent of the five month sales, trailing slightly behind Japan's Sony Corp., which took 12.7 percent.
The two Korean companies accounted for 61.5 percent of North American 3-D TV sales in the same period, NPD said.
