Incheon breaks ground for construction of 2014 Asiad's main stadium
INCHEON, June 28 (Yonhap) -- The Incheon metropolitan government held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday to build the main stadium for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, the venue for the event's opening and closing ceremonies as well as its track and field events.
The ceremony came after the South Korean port city of Incheon was selected in April 2007 as the host of the 2014 Asian Games.
The local government plans to spend 489.9 billion won (US$453 million) to build the main stadium with a seating capacity of 60,000. In addition to the main venue, the Asiad will also hold events at 49 other stadiums across Incheon and eight adjacent cities.
Construction of the main stadium is scheduled for completion in July 2014, but the local government said it aims to complete it sooner.
"I hope the 2014 Incheon Asian Games will be an opportunity to bring the two Koreas closer, and I will work to make it the most successful Asian Games ever," Incheon Mayor Song Young-gil said at the ceremony with Culture Minister Choung Byoung-gug, local officials and residents in attendance.
The Asiad, which is expected to bring together 13,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries, will include 36 events during its 16-day run from Sept. 19, 2014 to Oct. 4, 2014.
Located about 80 kilometers west of Seoul, Incheon will become the third South Korean city to host the quadrennial Asian Games, following Busan in 2002 and Seoul in 1986.
