Kazakh pres suggests dialogue between Muslim world and West.
ASTANA, June 28 (Itar-Tass) - The relations between Muslims and the
rest of the world, primarily the West, are one of the most serious
problems in world politics, President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan
said at the opening of the 38th session of the Council of Foreign
Ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) here on
Tuesday.
"The Muslim world has been associated in Western public opinion of
late primarily with its radical part and has evoked unreasonable fear,"
Nazarbayev said. "The real meaning of the Islamic teaching has nothing in
common with the activities of extremist, especially terrorist structures,
which use religious phrases as a cover-up. People of the Islamic countries
are the first to suffer from terrorism." He mentioned in this connection
the priority tasks the OIC member countries will have to fulfil.
"To begin with, we should learn to resist religious fundamentalism as
a political ideology," Nazarbayev said. In his opinion, the OIC countries
"should make it clear that Islam has nothing in common with political
violence, extremism or terrorism."
He reminded as well of the initiative on the creation of a common mass
media Islamic project, which he put forward at the World Islamic Economic
Forum, held in Astana this year.
"We are witnessing a massive offensive of the new mass media operating
in Internet. In this connection I suggest the creation of an Internet
resource for covering the work of our Organisation for promoting the
interest of young people in the Islamic religion and culture and for
spreading Muslim spiritual values," Nazarbayev said.
According to Nazarbayev, the second task is "to start an open and
honest dialogue between the Muslim world and the West."
"The presidency of Kazakhstan in OIC is aimed at attaining those noble
goals," the Kazakh President stressed.
