S. Korea to host global conference to counter nuclear terrorism

SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- An annual conference on cooperation among 82 nations will be held in South Korea this week to discuss how to strengthen their capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to nuclear terrorism, Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
The two-day general assembly of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT) is hosted by the South Korean government in Daejeon, 164 kilometers south of Seoul, starting on Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement.
About 200 officials and representatives from international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Police Organization, are scheduled to participate in the conference, according to the statement.
Participants are expected to discuss measures to improve global capacity for prevention, detection, and response to nuclear terrorism, it said.
The event is also likely to serve as a venue for preparations for next year's global summit on nuclear security to be held in South Korea, ministry officials said.
South Korea was chosen in April last year as the host for the next Nuclear Security Summit in March, which is a symbolic occasion for a country where North Korea's nuclear defiance has been the pressing crisis.
