PyeongChang holds Olympic bid presentation in Togo

SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- PyeongChang, a South Korean candidate to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, held a bid presentation before international sports officials in Togo on Tuesday, the local bidding committee here said.
According to the committee, PyeongChang offered a 20-minute presentation in Togo during the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly. PyeongChang's two rivals, Munich of Germany and Annecy in France, had 20 minutes each to present before the South Korean alpine town's presentation.
Some members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were on hand. This was the candidates' final joint presentation before the host city will be decided at the IOC General Assembly on July 6 in Durban, South Africa.
The bidding committee said PyeongChang's presenters were Cho Yang-ho, head of the bidding committee; Park Yong-sung, president of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC); Theresa Rah, the committee spokeswoman; and Kim Yu-na, Olympic figure skating gold medalist and an honorary ambassador for PyeongChang.
They tried to highlight the chance to build a new legacy for winter sports in Asia by bringing the Olympic Games to the continent for only the third time, the committee said. The previous two Winter Games in Asia were both held in Japan -- 1972 in Sapporo and 1998 in Nagano. The presenters also stressed that PyeongChang would offer a compact, athlete-friendly Olympics, according to the committee.
"PyeongChang 2018 has a grand vision for athletes from ANOCA," Cho was quoted as saying. "Our vision of 'New Horizons' will promote the Olympic Movement and spread winter sports across the world, and will leave a legacy of unprecedented potential."
The bidding committee said Kim, who took the ladies' figure skating title at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, explained what PyeongChang will have to offer to athletes and officials, such as training facilities and accommodations, and also introduced entertainment programs for visitors.
The committee added that Park listed five reasons that PyeongChang would make a great host: a compact and efficient games plan, strong governmental support, passion of the people, fulfilling commitments with the Olympic Family and its good partnership with the IOC.
PyeongChang came up short in two previous bids, losing to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics and to Sochi for the 2014 games.
