Obama's nomination for Seoul envoy 'great choice': U.S. ambassador

SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- The outgoing U.S. ambassador on Wednesday expressed high expectations for the nominee to replace her, saying the nomination of Sung Kim would upgrade the Seoul-Washington alliance to a new level.
U.S. President Barack Obama nominated last week the veteran diplomat Kim as the next ambassador to South Korea, the first Korean-American to become Washington's envoy to Seoul.
"I think President Obama made a great choice," U.S. Ambassador Kathleen Stephens said in an article she posted on her embassy's blog.
"I've worked with Sung Kim for years and I know him to be a talented diplomat who will work tirelessly to strengthen the U.S.-ROK (South Korea) relationship."
Stephens said she "looks forward to a smooth confirmation process for Ambassador Kim."
The 51-year-old Kim has served as the U.S. chief envoy on the six-party denuclearization talks with North Korea since 2009.
The six-party talks, involving the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia, have been dormant since Pyongyang stormed out of the forum in April 2009, in anger of a fresh round of U.N. sanctions. A month later, the North conducted its second nuclear test.
