Space shuttle Atlantis to begin final journey to ISS Jul 8--NASA.
NEW YORK, June 29 (Itar-Tass) - NASA has finally decided on a date for
space shuttle Atlantis' last journey to the International Space Station
(ISS) to bring the space shuttle program to a close.
NASA officials announced Tuesday that the space shuttle would blast
off from the J.F. Kennedy space launch center on July 8 at 11:26 EST.
There will be four astronauts aboard the space shuttle: mission
commander Christopher Ferguson, space pilot Douglas Hurley, and two
specialists -- Rex Walheim and Sandy Magnus.
The main mission of the last journey of the Atlantis will be to
deliver a multifunctional payload module and various equipment that will
be ensuring the functioning of the ISS throughout 2012.
The Atlantis has been in service with NASA for 26 years. The
forthcoming flight will be a 33rd one to the space shuttle and a 135th one
to NASA . Upon returning to Earth, the space shuttle will remain in
Florida and will be put on display at the J.F. Kennedy space launch center.
