Fewer ethnic Koreans from China stay in S. Korea
SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- The number of ethnic Koreans from China in South Korea has fallen below 300,000 for the first time in four years, a government report said Wednesday.
The tally was 281,000 as of January this year, down 86,000 from 367,000 a year ago, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security said in a recently published report on foreign residents.
After peaking at 382,000 in 2009, the population has decreased for the second straight year, according to the report.
Analysts say the fall is due to the government policy introduced 2009 to restrict work visa issuances for ethnic Koreans from China.
