First South Sudan Embassy in GCC will be in UAE: says Vice President of South Sudan
Abu Dhabi, June 29, 2011 (WAM) - South Sudan will set up its first Embassy in the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) in the UAE, Vice President of the Government of South Sudan Dr Riek Machar Teny, said yesterday at a press conference in Dubai. He added that his nascent country will also open the trade representative office in Dubai to promote the trade in South Sudan.
Dr Teny, who is on two-day tour in the UAE, revealed that the UAE will host South Sudan Investment Conference in October, adding that the event will be attended by a number of South Sudan' ministers and the UAE officials. He hoped that President of South Sudan General Salva Kiir Mayardit shall attend the conference.
He said the UAE is a financial and economic powerhouse, indicating that there are untapped investment opportunities in South Sudan, such as tourism, transport, oil industry (refineries and pipelines) and energy projects the UAE could utilised. He added these projects will be presented at the conference.
Dr Teny extended invitation to Emirati investors to benefit from the untapped investment opportunities.
He revealed that he had held meetings with a number of UAE officials, among others, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash and State Minister Reem Al Hashimi. "The talks tackled ways to boost the cooperation between the UAE and the Government of South Sudan. People of South Sudan look forward to building the stronger ties with the UAE." Dr Teny said the visit comes days ahead of the Declaration of South Sudan Independence on July 9, to discuss cooperation in different fields, indicating that the Government of South Sudan plans to launch an air route between Juba and the UAE.
Regarding the North- South Relations, he said, "we are looking forward to better ties, trade relations and free border movement for people. The stability is essential for both sides. About one third of the Sudanese people live across the North-South Borders, home of the oil and vast agricultural resources. Hence, there is a need for stability for both sides".
Dr Riek said the current talks in the Ethiopian Capital, Addis Ababa, focus on creating safe zones that attract investment at the borders. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
