S. Korea, Indonesia agree to seek joint energy projects

SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Indonesia agreed Thursday to launch new joint energy development projects in Indonesia and other countries as part of efforts to further increase their energy cooperation, officials here said.
The agreement came at the fourth annual South Korea-Indonesia Energy Forum held in Jakarta with some 90 officials from both sides, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
"The two countries agreed to actively seek joint participation in new energy development projects in not only Indonesia but other third countries," the ministry said in a press release. "The sides also discussed ways to jointly establish a natural gas distribution system in Indonesia and develop new methane gas and copper mines in Indonesia."
South Korea established its first intergovernmental energy cooperation committee with Indonesia in 1979 and currently imports over US$4 billion worth of natural minerals from the Southeast Asian country, accounting for one fourth of all its annual mineral imports, according to the ministry.
"The two countries agreed to further increase their cooperation in the energy and natural resources sector and further develop their energy forum," it said.
