Reservist sentenced to 120-hour community service for missing 40-hour training
BUSAN, June 30 (Yonhap) -- A 28-year-old man indicted of skipping 40 hours of military reserve training has been dealt a punishment three times harsher -- 120 hours of community service, a local court said Thursday.
The district court here, about 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said the man, surnamed Shin, was sentenced to four months in prison with its execution suspended for one year, plus 120 hours of community service. He was charged with violating the law on reserve forces.
According to the court, Shin didn't attend his mandatory reserve forces training from 2007 to 2009 for no apparent reason and also missed the 40-hour supplementary training in May last year.
In South Korea, able-bodied men must serve at least two years in the armed forces and receive training as reserve troops for several years after their discharge.
