MALAYSIA TO HOST PACIFIC RIM SUMMIT ON INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOENERGY
FROM LESLEAN ARSHAD
WASHINGTON, June 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia made a coup by bringing the annual
Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy to its shores in
November, the first time ever it will be organised outside the United States
since its inception.
The 6th Pacific Rim Summit, hosted by US-based Biotechnology Industry
Organisation (BIO), will be held in conjunction with BioMalaysia 2011 on Nov
21-23 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Congratulating Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) and BIO for
succesfully bringing together the two events to Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Prime
Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the convengence of the global events
would provide an avenue for participants and industry professional within
Malaysia, Asia and the Americas to share experience and insight on the latest
trends and developments in biotechnology.
"We can certainly look forward to the depth and breadth of discussions,
innovative solutions, regional and global collaborations and a dynamic business
networking sessions," he said as he extended invitation to potential
participants and exhibitors during a curtain raiser event for the BioMalaysia
and the Summit, here Wednesday.
Muhyiddin said whilst the BioMalaysia 2011 would focus mainly on agriculture
and healthcare in areas such as feedstock technology, human capital development,
commercialisation, market access financing and new business model, the Summit
would be focusing on industrial biotechnology and bioenergy across Asia and
emerging regions of the world.
The BioMalaysia has been acknowledged as the biggest biotechnology event in
Asia and has established itself as a major meeting point for industry
professionals in the region.
The Pacific Rim Summit features programmes such as building a bio-based
economy and utilisation of biomass resources, algae technology, marine
bio-resources, advanced biofuels, renewable hydrocarbons, biopolymers and
bioplastics, dedicated energy crops, green chemistry, synthetic biology and
other bio-related issues.
Speaking to Malaysian journalists covering his four-day working visit to
Washington, Muhyiddin said the "Who's Who" in the biotechnology industry would
come to Malaysia this year since the Pacific Rim Summit would held in Kuala
Lumpur.
"It is a coup by Malaysia to be able to bring the best. This connotes
another degree of confidence how Americans feel for Malaysia. They give credit
to the Prime Minister (Najib Tun Razak) for positive approaches," he
said.
