ICONIC TG PAGAR RAILWAY STATION "IMPORTANT HISTORY" TO NEWLY-WEDS
SINGAPORE, June 30 (Bernama) -- When the clock strikes 12 tonight, the
iconic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station which linked Malaysia and Singapore, is set
to ride into the sunset, ceasing operations after nearly eight decades.
For Azman Harun and wife Asmiah Bakri, the railway station -- while
remaining a part of history since it began operating way back in 1932 -- brings,
not only a flood of wonderful memories but a tinge of sadness, as well.
It was at the railway station where the couple met for the first time in
1999, and the attraction was instant. They fell in love.
Today (Thursday), the love birds solemnised their marriage in the republic
to start life anew as husband and wife.
On this happy occassion, the couple note with sadness that coincidentally,
the railway station would fade into oblivion, come midnight.
"We feel very sad that the railway station will be closed. We have a lot of
memories here because this was where we first met, and today we are married,"
Asmiah, 30, told Bernama here today.
Wanting to see the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station for the last time, Asmiah
and Azman, 35, resplendent in their traditional Malay costumes, visited the
venue where they first met and fell in love.
The couple, who are Malaysian citizens with permanent residence status in
Singapore, said the railway station had played a vital role in commuting people
of both countries.
According to Azman, both of them were frequent passengers of the train
service in Tanjong Pagar, whenever they wanted to visit their family members in
Johor Baharu, Johor, Malaysia.
Johor Bahru is situated on the tip of the Malay Peninsula and is connected
to Singapore via a one-kilometer causeway.
"It was our main means of transportation to Malaysia," he said.
While the railway station would cease operations, Asmiah fondly hopes the
historical building would not be demolished.
She said the younger generation should be exposed to the history behind the
Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and its importance in the relations between the
two countries.
