FAO enhances capacity of Saravane’s agro-fisheries sector

VIENTIANE,JUN.(KPL)- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) handed over equipments to the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Office (PAFO) in Saravane on 18 June 2011 out of the funds channeled from the Government of Italy in its capacity building and institutional strengthening project “Sub-regional Environmental Animal Health Management Initiative for Enhanced Smallholder Production in South-East Asia” (EAHMI).
This project is executed by the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with FAO.
The equipments provided were: a “Dell” desktop, a Honda Wave 100cc motorbike, a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) and a “Canon” printer.
In addition, an ADSL router modem and advanced payment for internet during 6 months were provided. These equipments are to be used in enhancing data collection, analysis and reporting skills as well as using the GPS for accurate location of disease outbreak and surveillance sites.
The same kind of equipments were provided to Sayaboury.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mahanakone Souriya, Deputy Director General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries as project officer of the EAHMI in the Lao PDR said that the handing over the equipments Saravane will enhance the capacity of the staff in using the GPS and also strengthen the national system of data through standardization and harmonization of data collection and the compilation of a more comprehensive and more accurate database of Geographical Information System in the country.
