Ground broken for Hangeul museum in Seoul
SEOUL, July 1 (Yonhap) -- Ground was broken on Friday on the construction of a museum for the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, in Seoul, officials said.
The museum highlighting the superiority and uniqueness of Hangeul will be built inside the compound of the National Museum of Korea and is set to be completed by the first half of 2013, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The museum will be a three-story building with a total floor space of 11,322 square meters, including 4,200 square meters of space for exhibits, it said.
In addition to the exhibit hall, there will be separate rooms where visitors can experience the superiority of Hangeul and search computerized information on the Korean characters, the ministry said.
The 36.9-billion-won (US$34.6 million) construction project began after President Lee Myung-bak instructed the culture ministry to build a tourist spot focused on Hangeul and to promote the writing system as an icon of Korean culture.
Hangeul was invented by King Sejong of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) in 1443 to replace older writing systems based on the Chinese script so as to broaden literacy across the general population and energetically promote learning. The king declared it Joseon's official alphabet three years later.
