SEOUL, June 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's five automakers, led by Hyundai Motor Co., said Friday their global sales increased nearly 15 percent on-year in June thanks mainly to rapid gains in overseas markets.
The combined sales of the five automakers came to 683,703 units last month, up 14.6 percent from the 596,630 vehicles sold a year earlier. The growth rate marks a slight increase from a 14.4 percent gain in May.
Their sales in overseas markets jumped 16.7 percent on-year to 555,770 units last month while domestic shipments rose 5.9 percent on-year to 127,933 units, according to data released by the companies.
The four other automakers are Hyundai's affiliate Kia Motors Corp.; GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of the world's largest automaker General Motors; Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French automaker Renault SA; and Ssangyong Motor Co.
Hyundai regained its strong grip on its long-held position as the industry leader with its domestic sales gaining 22.9 percent on-year to 59,761 units in June and surpassing the company's affiliate and largest competitor, Kia, by a large margin.
Hyundai's overall sales came to 352,255 units last month, up 12.3 percent from the same period last year, with exports jumping 10.4 percent compared to the year before.
Kia also saw its overall sales jump 21.8 percent from a year earlier to 217,315 units. Kia's domestic sales dropped 5 percent on-year to 42,200 units, but its overseas sales spiked 30.7 percent to 175,115 units to keep its overall sales growing, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The combined sales of Hyundai and Kia topped a record 1.95 million vehicles, up 10.6 percent from the year before. The pair are the flagships of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker.
GM Korea continued to enjoy the strong sales momentum that followed its launch of the Chevrolet brand here earlier in the year.
The company sold a record 79,557 vehicles last month, up 10 percent from a year earlier. Its domestic sales soared 37.2 percent on-year to 13,761 units, with exports rising 5.7 percent to 65,796 units.
Ssangyong, which had recently emerged from nearly two years of court receivership, continued to see great improvements with its overall sales topping 10,000 units for the fourth consecutive month in June.
The company sold 10,364 vehicles in June, up 39.6 percent from the same period last year. Domestic sales, however, dipped 7.6 percent to 2,777 units, with exports jumping 71.7 percent on-year to 7,587 units.
Renault Samsung, which has been slow to release new vehicle models amid intensifying competition, saw its overall sales fall off 2.9 percent despite a large increase in exports. The company is the only carmaker in the country to see its overall sales drop vis-a-vis the year before.
The company sold 24.212 vehicles last month, compared with 24,942 units sold in the same period last year. Exports surged 43.6 percent to 14,778 units, but domestic sales dropped 35.6 percent to 9,434 units.
In the first half of this year, total sales of the five carmakers rose 14.7 percent on-year to 3.78 million units. Domestic sales rose 3.8 percent on-year to 734,686 vehicles in the January-June period with exports rising 17.7 percent to 3.05 million units.
