S. Korean minister to attend independence ceremony of South Sudan

SEOUL, July 1 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean Cabinet minister will visit South Sudan next week as a special presidential envoy to attend a ceremony marking the independence of Africa's newest state, Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Friday.
Lee Jae-oh, a lawmaker of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) who doubles as a minister for special affairs, will attend the ceremony where South Sudan will officially declare independence from the North on July 9, the ministry said in a statement.
Two GNP lawmakers, Rep. Kwon Teag-ky and Chang Je-won, will accompany Minister Lee on his visit to South Sudan, the statement said.
The people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly in January to create a new country. In April, South Sudan President Salva Kiir invited South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to attend the ceremony, according to the ministry statement.
President Lee can't visit South Sudan because of his conflicting schedule, ministry officials said. Lee is scheduled to visit three African nations -- South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia -- from Saturday.
