MALAYSIA AND US BLESSED WITH STORIES LEADING TO STRONGER RELATIONSHIP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and the United States (US) are blessed with a variety of vibrant stories, leading to a stronger relationship and friendship between both countries, said US ambassador to Malaysia Paul W. Jones.

He said the stories include a mission of US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sending an eminent American scientist as the US Science Envoy to lash up their scientific communities in time for Malaysia’s Year of Science next year.

"Both countries have a growing chapter on science, with the Prime Minister Najib Razak creating a new partnership with the New York Academy of Sciences," he said in his speech during the celebration of the 235th anniversary of the Independence of the United States here Friday.

He pointed out that even young people learning from each other had a better understanding in culture, strengthening English and building friendship that would endure for decades to come.

"A new chapter is also being written in higher education, with top
universities like John Hopkins Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology creating new partnerships for students and researchers here in Malaysia," he said.

In terms of business, Jones said hundreds of American businesses are, and have long been, full partners in Malaysia’s remarkable economic success.

"Our trading story has produced prosperity in both our nations. A new chapter is aiming to create a 21st century free trade agreement called the Trans Pacific Partnership," he added.

The event was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Special Envoy to India and South Asia on Infrastructure S. Samy Vellu.
