Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov gets Tchaikovsky Competition Grand

St PETERSBURG (Itar-Tass) - Russian pianist Daniil Trifanov on
Saturday was named winner of the Grand Prix of the 14th Tchaikovsky
international competition.
The award was handed to the 20-year-old performer in the concert hall
of the Mariinsky /Kirov/ theater in St Petersburg where prizewinners and
laureates of the competition gave a gala concert.
Trifonov, who was born in Nizhny Novgorod in the middle reaches of
the Volga River, is an experienced international contestant at his fairly
young age.
Last year, he received a hard-won third prize at the Chopin
competition in Warsaw. In May 2011, he emerged victorious from the Arthur
Rubinstein contest of young pianists in Tel Aviv.
Trifonov graduated from the Gnessins School of Music in Moscow and is
currently studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Apart from competitions, he has participated in festivals in Austria,
Germany, Italy, Russia, and the U.S.
At Saturday's gala concert, the Tchaikovsky competition winners played
to the accompaniment of the world-famous orchestra of the Mariinski
Theater under the baton of maestro Valery Gergiyev.
This year, the Tchaikovsky competition was for the first time ever
held in Moscow and St Petersburg simultaneously.
It aroused an intense interest among the professional community of
musicians worldwide.
