Venezuela's top military pledge loyalty to President Chavez

CARACAS (Itar-Tass) - Venezuela's Armed Forces maintain
loyalty to their commander-in-chief Hugo Chavez, the country's Defense
Minister, Carlos Mata Figueroa said Saturday.
National television showed excerpts from his speech at a ceremony
where a group of generals and admirals accepted grade promotions.
As the soldiers of their motherland, the Venezuelan officers represent
the spirit and soul of their nation and they would like to express their
sense of confidence and trust in Hugo Chavez as the supreme commander and
the head of the revolutionary government.
United as never before, the military pray for President Chavez's
earliest possible recovery, Mata said.
He said that the President has always been and remains the main
supporting pillar of the revolution and serves a graphic example of a
reunion between the Army and the people, he said.
Last Friday, General Enrique Rangel Silva, who stands at the head of
Venezuela's strategic operations command, said the Armed Forces remain a
reliable guarantor of the Constitution.
The general believes some people from the opposition's ranks would
certainly try to whisper in the military's ears that the Constitution
could be ignored but military intelligence had not registered any such
designs for the time being, and that is why the constitutional law and
orders is guaranteed.
As reported earlier, President Chavez told the fellow-countryment in a
televised address Monday that the surgeons had found a tumor with cancer
cells in his body while giving him a surgery to remove a pelvic abscess.
The discovery required a second surgery, as a result of which the
tumor was fully eliminated, Chavez said in a televised address to the
nation.
In connection with this, Gen Rangel Silva said he had visited the
President who was taking a course of treatment in Cuba.
He described in conditions, in which Chavez was recuperating, as
really good ones.
The President looks very active and shows all the typical qualities of his personal character, he general said.
