Bahraini Opposition Asks for Independent Army, Judiciary
TEHRAN (FNA)- Bahraini opposition forces blasted the al-Khalifa regime's dependence on foreign countries, and underlined that their country should have an independent army and judiciary system.
"The opposition forces want a parliament with the authority to elect and assign the government and they want an independent army and judiciary but we can now just see the puppets of the al-Khalifa regime," member of the Bahrain Freedom Movement Saeed Shihabi said on Sunday.
He further pointed to the talks with the Bahraini political figures organized by the al-Khalifa regime, and said such negotiations cannot be referred to as national reconciliation talks since a large number of Bahraini opposition forces are still in prison and cannot attend the talks.
Anti-regime protesters in recent days have intensified their massive demonstrations in the Bahraini capital, Manama, to call for the ouster of the ruling al-Khalifa dynasty.
Protesters took to the streets on Saturday, the same day that the government announced it would hold negotiations with the country's opposition leaders.
Opposition leaders, however, have said they would withdraw from the dialogue if the people's demands are not met.
They have also raised questions about whether the government would be committed to a change, pointing out the fact that only 10 percent of the seats at the forum have been set aside for their members.
Anti-regime protesters have been holding peaceful demonstrations across Bahrain since mid-February, calling for an end to the Al Khalifa rule.
Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds arrested in the Saudi-backed crackdown since then.
Moreover, Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa said on Wednesday that he wanted a "completely independent" committee to be formed to investigate the brutal crackdown of anti-regime protesters, while claiming that the government will not interfere in the investigation.
