Iran's War on Narcotics: Police Seize Large Amounts of Narcotics in 2 Days
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Law Enforcement Police forces have seized over 2 tons of different types of illicit drugs in separate operations in Iran's Southeastern province of Kerman during the last 48 hours, the provincial police department announced on Sunday.
According to a statement released by the public relations office of Kerman's Law Enforcement Headquarters, Commander of Kerman's Anti-Drug Forces Ali Qazizadeh said that the police troops have also arrested 48 drug-traffickers during the operations.
The commander added that seizures include 1,700 kg of opium, 313kg of crack (condensed heroin), 49kg of hashish, 29kg of morphine, about 50 kg of catalysts used for the production of Crystal (methamphetamine) and 3kg of heroin.
According to Commander Qazizadeh, police have also disbanded a large drug-trafficking gang in the operations.
Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe as well as the Persian Gulf states. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3700 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.
Owing to its rigid efforts, Iran makes 89 percent of the world's total opium seizures and has turned into the leading country in drug campaign.
The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations in recent months.
The Iranian anti-narcotic police have always staged periodic, but short-term, operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but the latest reports - which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information - reveal that the world's most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) has embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to crack down on the drug trade since the beginning of the current Iranian year.
