NO ROOM FOR ORGANISERS TO HOLD ILLEGAL DEMONSTRATION, IGP

BUTTERWORTH (Penang, Malaysia), July 3 (Bernama) -- Police will not give any opportunity to groups wishing to organise any illegal assembly in the federal capital on July 9 and will act according to the provisions of the law against anyone posing a threat to national security.

Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar said action would be taken
regardless of any statement or assumption made by others on the police action.

He said if the assembly were to go ahead, it would jeopardise national peace and lead to chaos.

"Don't challenge the sovereignty of the law which has been enshrined in the federal constitution. Police will take appropriate action using the law provided against anyone violating the law," he said here Sunday.

He also urged those intending to participate in the illegal assembly next week to abort their plan or face police action.

He said the police had received more than 2,000 police reports nationwide protesting against the illegal assembly.

Ismail said police had certain strategies which could be used to maintain security.

Earlier, the IGP had launched the 'Jom Cegah Jenayah' (Come Let's Prevent Crime) campaign at Pantai Bersih, near the lay-by along the Butterworth Outer Ring Road, here.

He said such campaigns had helped the police to reduce the crime rate.
