Academy of Orthodox Music fest to open in St Pete Mon
ST PETERSBURG, July 4 (Itar-Tass) - An Academy of Orthodox Music
international festival opens here on Monday under the auspices of the
Russian Ministry of Culture and the Presidential administration. The
festival received a blessing from Patriarch Kirill. The purpose of the
festival is to foster love and respect for the great spiritual culture of
Russia.
The events of the festival include an extensive concert-giving,
educational and enlightening tour programme. Concerts, lectures and
artistic workshops are to be held in the best halls and palaces of the
city. Within the past two years the festival brought together
participants from over 30 countries.
The festival is to be introduced in the Grand Hall of St
Petersburg Philharmonic Society on Monday night. Divna Ljubojevic, a
brilliant performer of spiritual music with a unique voice and a
distinctive manner of singing, will giea performance in Russia for the
first time accompanied by the Melodi ensemble. She will perform Serb and
Byzantine ancient chants and spiritual verses.
The festival's bill also announces performances by the choir of the
Kiev ecclesistical academy. the choir of the Kiev Cave Monastery, monk
James, chief protopsalt of the Careah Cathedral on the Holy Mount Athos,
and the combined choir of the festival and men's group of the singing
Capella.
On July 12, the day of the Feast of St Apostles Peter and Paul, the
Academy pupils unite into a large choir performing an evening- service on
the stage of the Grand Hall of the Philharmonic Society on the strength of
interpretations of the Moscow chants of the last quarter of the 17th
century.
Choral art enthusiasts look forward to a meeting with the Georgian
ensemble of spiritual music, the Romanian Byzantine Choir, and the
Bulgarian choir of clergymen.
The projects is to be completed on July 28 with a traditional concert
on the Valaam Island. Monastic choristers, participants in the Academy,
and the best choirs of the festival will join together for the concert.
