Iran's War on Narcotics: Iranian Police Intercept Huge Drug Cargo in Southern Waters
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian law enforcement police squads have discovered and seized almost 367kg of opium in four separate operations in the country's Persian Gulf province of Hormozgan during the last 24 hours, a provincial police chief announced on Monday.
Hormozgan's Police Chief General Mohammad Ali Akhoundi told reporters that after massive intelligence operations, the special anti-drug police force of the province identified a large drug ring which intended to transfer a large drug cargo from the Southern port city of Jask to the provincial capital city of Bandar Abbas via sea routes.
The commander said that police forces intercepted the cargo in Bandar Abbas and seized 275.3kg of opium.
Akhoundi added that his forces also intercepted another cargo near the town of Roudan and seized 64.8kg of opium.
He added that a total volume of 26.5kg of opium was seized in two other operations in the other parts of the province.
The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations since last year.
The Iranian police measures along eastern borders have forced drug-traffickers to resort to other routes, including the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf, to smuggle their drug cargos which originate in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Iran, located at the crossroad of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan to Europe, and according to the statistical figures released by the UN, Iran ranks first among the world countries in preventing entry of drugs and decreasing demand for narcotics.
