China protests over Japanese fishing off Senkaku Islands

BEIJING/NAHA, Japan, July 4 Kyodo -
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Monday it has lodged a complaint with Japan over Japanese fishing activities in disputed waters off the Senkaku Islands, while a Japanese fisherman asserted his right to fish in the area.
In a statement, the ministry said China has demanded that Japan ensure the fishing boats involved immediately leave waters off the islands in the East China Sea, noting that the islets, controlled by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan, have long been part of Chinese territory.
In response, Hidemitsu Naka, a 47-year-old fisherman, said upon returning from the waters to Ishigaki port in Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, ''It's an undeniable fact that my father and ancestors have fished near the Senkakus for generations.''
Ten fishing boats left the port on Sunday morning and reached the disputed waters around noon the same day, planning to fish in the area for two to three days, according to Naka and other people.
But they headed back early because of rough waters and all 10 boats were back in port by late Monday afternoon, they said.
The Chinese ministry said any measures taken by the Japanese side in waters off the islands are invalid.
